Bill Bradley, who owns a small house and a one-horse corral in the hills, saves the lives of Betty Brent and her brother Mike from a forest fire in which their mother has perished. He decides to take care of them. When word spreads that Betty is actually 18, a committee of citizens, headed by Cliff Barrowes, whose father holds a mortgage on Bill's property, calls to protest; the sheriff's wife offers the children a home; and soon after, Cliff begins to woo the girl. Bill, meanwhile, is forcibly held by a trio of outlaws about to flee across the border.

When prospector Tom Andrews is injured near their home Leota and Dad nurse him back to health and give him work in their little mine. A mountain boy takes it upon himself to protect wild animals from hunters and trappers.
Chester Winfield tries to make it as a lumberjack, but he's foiled by his lack of strength and the jealous foreman, Big Bill Reardon, after Chester catches the eye of Hazel Wood, Big Bill's favorite and the camp's waitress. Bill tries to eliminate Chester, so he and Hazel head down the mountain for other work. She waits tables and gets him a job as a dishwasher. He spills kerosene in the soup and then must serve it to an angry customer. Hazel tells a couple of tall tales about Chester, and soon all the customers, the owner, and the cook, think he's a desperado. They make him the saloon bouncer. Some trick shooting seals his reputation. Then Big Bill arrives for a showdown.
Phil Stanley (William Fairbanks) and Harry Hartley (Edmond Cobb) are traveling toward Alaska when they come to a town controlled by scoundrels. The leaders of the town banish Phil and Harry, but they refuse to leave and send Glory (Ena Gregory) to summon the sheriff from a neighboring town to assist them. The sheriff comes to Phil's rescue and arrests the town council of scoundrels.

Tom Halloway, compelled through circumstances to become an outlaw, robs the express office on the day of his sister's arrival from the East and is seen at the scene of the crime by McTavish, a religious fanatic. Accompanying Tom in his escape from the posse is Sam Langdon, a prospector charged with McTavish's murder. He clears up the situation, wins a pardon for Tom, and wins May, Tom's sister.
